Runway launches Media Router for generative media model selection

Runway launched the Runway Media Router through its Runway Dev platform, which provides API access to third-party image, video, and audio models alongside Runway‘s own models.

The Media Router is a tool that automatically selects the best model for a request based on whether a developer prioritizes quality, speed, or cost.

Runway claims this is the first model router built specifically for generative media.

The launch reflects the fragmented generative media landscape and Runway‘s shift from being primarily an AI video model company to becoming an infrastructure layer.

Runway Dev customers include Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora.

The router’s intelligence layer is based on expertise Runway‘s in-house creative team has developed in evaluating output across media types, and the routing technology is the same one Runway built for its own agent product.

Developers can set preferences such as cost and quality, and also can potentially restrict which geographic regions’ models can be used, such as excluding Chinese model providers.

Runway‘s own text-to-video and image-to-video models no longer lead top rankings, with models from Google, ByteDance, and Alibaba now occupying many top spots.

Co-founder and co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis acknowledged that Runway has historically been known for the end-user piece, but the company has built a full stack including a developer platform, creative tool suite, and inference layer.

The router keeps Runway relevant as a model orchestration layer even as its own frontier models may not lead the rankings.
