OpenAI Acquires Pierre, Developer of Code Storage and Codex Tools

OpenAI announced that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, the team behind Code Storage and several open-source developer tools that Codex currently uses. Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries are already integrated into Codex for browsing project files and reviewing changes. The acquisition is driven by the view that Git workflows need to change as coding agents and engineers work in parallel; OpenAI earlier described its own effort in this area, Pando, an in-house source control backend. With Pierre, OpenAI wants to set a new standard for modern software development and make Codex the place where developers and agents tackle large projects.
The post highlights Pierre’s attention to developer experience: Trees supports fast file navigation, Diffs shows changes clearly, its Edit mode lets reviewers fix lines directly, and Highlights is a recently released syntax highlighter that updates as code streams. The same small team designed the API for Code Storage, a service for storing code and tracking history with Git.
After closing, Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source, and Code Storage customers can keep using the service while OpenAI works to bring its features into Codex. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval, and the two companies remain independent until then.
