Nvidia invests $1.5B in SB Energy for OpenAI data center infrastructure

Nvidia will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, a data center developer backed by SoftBank and OpenAI, according to an SEC filing.
The investment secures Nvidia as the exclusive compute infrastructure supplier for OpenAI‘s Ports-Pike data center near Cincinnati, Ohio.
Nvidia will also extend up to $105 billion in credit to support construction of the facility, which is planned to scale from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts.
The site, on land owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, previously enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and Navy submarines. SB Energy will build a 9.
2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on the site, with an expected cost of $33 billion.
The high cost reflects a 66% increase in natural gas power plant construction costs over the last two years, according to BloombergNEF. Nvidia‘s investment follows SoftBank’s sale of $5.
8 billion in Nvidia stock in November to fund other AI investments.
