Cursor launched Origin this week, a code-hosting platform covering the core workflows developers typically run through GitHub: collaborative work on codebases, browsing and editing, pull requests, and repository storage. The launch extends Cursor, an AI startup now officially part of SpaceX, whose focus until now has been selling automated web development services through its AI Code Editor. Cursor says “agent native” features will arrive for Origin soon without sharing details yet, and it is building a broader “app ecosystem” to support wider coding efforts inside the platform.

Origin is designed to work alongside GitHub rather than replace it. Developers can keep GitHub repos next to Cursor-hosted ones, connect their GitHub organization, and sync repositories directly into Origin, with code passing between the two platforms. The interoperability lowers the switching cost for teams that want to test Origin without abandoning their existing GitHub setup.

The timing coincides with sustained frustration over GitHub reliability. On the same day Origin launched, GitHub suffered a worldwide outage lasting more than six hours, with roughly a 20% error rate globally. Earlier this year, after a rash of outages, GitHub announced new actions to address availability complaints. LeadDev analysis counted 257 outages over the past year, and reporter Charles Humble describes “a visible exodus of high-profile users” from the platform.

Competing with GitHub remains a formidable task. GitHub reports about 180 million developers use its platform as of last October, and it continues to be the largest source-code host in the world, founded in 2007 and acquired by Microsoft in 2012. Origin‘s main differentiators so far are interoperability with GitHub and the promise of agent-native workflows, but displacing the incumbent will require sustained reliability and a credible feature set.
