Amazon is planning a data center in Pecos County, Texas, that includes an on-site natural gas power plant.

According to The New York Times, this plant is permitted to release 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, which would make it the single largest source of climate pollution in the United States.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the data center “will be powered by new on-site generation that won’t raise electricity costs for Texas families,” addressing growing political opposition to data centers over their impact on electricity costs.

The announcement comes as Amazon‘s carbon emissions rose 16% last year, moving the company further from its 2040 net-zero pledge.

The spokesperson acknowledged that “the world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge,” while asserting that “our commitment hasn’t changed.

” This project reflects a broader trend of tech companies backing large natural gas plants to support power-hungry AI data centers, potentially worsening their environmental footprint.
