AlloyDB Express: Agent-Ready PostgreSQL for Rapid Testing and Prototyping

AlloyDB Express is a new preview offering from Google Cloud, built on AlloyDB for PostgreSQL, and aimed at developers and AI coding agents. The announcement argues that database provisioning has become a bottleneck in AI-enabled software development: coding agents stall on slow database creation, CI/CD pipelines are slowed by complexity, and internal apps struggle when moving from sandbox to production. AlloyDB Express is designed to remove those delays while keeping enterprise security.
Provisioning takes under two seconds using gcloud CLI, REST API, MCP, Terraform, or Console. The service also scale-to-zero: after 15 minutes of inactivity, compute costs drop to $0.00 per hour, and the database wakes automatically when a new query arrives. On the security side, default connections use public DNS endpoints that mask IP addresses and block inbound traffic until explicitly allowed; internal workloads can connect through Private Service Connect or private DNS; and permissions are enforced with Google Cloud IAM, VPC Service Controls, and native PostgreSQL roles. Platform administrators define IAM, network, and organization policies once, and all developer- or agent-created databases stay within those guardrails.
AlloyDB Express embeds AI capabilities directly rather than relying on external vector stores. It includes fast vector search using pgvector HNSW and Google’s ScaNN index, so embeddings can be stored and searched alongside operational data for RAG, semantic search, and recommendation engines without syncing to a separate vector database. Gemini models are accessible inside SQL queries: developers can generate text or image embeddings on the fly and use functions such as ai.if, ai.rank, and ai.generate within standard SELECT and INSERT statements. AlloyDB Studio and natural language APIs let developers and agents generate, run, and refine queries from plain English.
Pricing is compute-hour based and billed per second: $0.115 per Compute Unit hour when active, $0.00 when paused, and $0.30 per GB-month for storage actually used. A free tier provides 50 free CUs per month. For production, one click upgrades an Express instance to full AlloyDB, preserving data, schemas, users, and connection strings, while adding enterprise high availability, read replicas, and disaster recovery. AlloyDB Express is available now in preview via the Google Cloud console, with documentation linked in the announcement.
