Uber puts all 30,000 employees on ChatGPT Work

Uber and OpenAI announced an expanded partnership on Thursday: the ride-share company is rolling out ChatGPT Work to its entire global workforce of about 30,000 employees. ChatGPT Work, an enterprise-focused AI agent OpenAI introduced in July, was piloted at Uber with 1,000 employees earlier this year. According to Sumanth Sukumar, Uber‘s VP of engineering, about 80% of those early adopters were non-engineers, including workers from finance, operations, and product. They used the tool for analyzing operational data to spot trends and develop recommendations, localizing training materials across markets and languages, and building personalized interactive dashboards for daily work.

Uber says it has not fixed how employees will use the chatbot. Sukumar described the approach as making powerful AI tools available across Uber while giving teams room to experiment. He cited a program in which 30 AI engineers were paired with teams for two weeks to automate key parts of their jobs; those “AI pods” showed how much opportunity exists when technical expertise is combined with deep understanding of a particular job.

Uber did not disclose the cost of the rollout. Instead, Sukumar said the company will track usage, workflows, and effectiveness, then use what it learns to guide broader AI deployment. OpenAI worked closely with Uber on the integration. The announcement comes as OpenAI pushes to scale its enterprise business amid competition with Anthropic; the article notes OpenAI has gained a loyal following among business customers after being known mainly as a consumer brand.
