Seattle Times and Newsday sue OpenAI and Microsoft over AI training

The Seattle Times and Newsday have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that their journalism was used without permission to train AI models.
The suit argues that generative AI could destroy the news organizations that produce the content it consumes, describing the technology as “a snake eating its own tail.
” The lawsuit follows a similar 2023 case by The New York Times and other publishers. Notably, Microsoft and OpenAI had previously funded journalism projects and fellowships at The Seattle Times.
A Microsoft spokesperson expressed surprise and openness to discussing solutions.
