Over 100 Tech Companies Sign Open Letter to Defend Against Rogue AI

Over a hundred tech companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft have signed an open letter urging both the private and public sectors to collaborate against AI-related cyber threats. The letter warns that AI-enabled cyber attacks will become more widespread and sophisticated, putting critical infrastructure such as hospitals, water treatment plants, and internet infrastructure at risk. It calls for the adoption of new cyber defense methods and encourages governments at local, national, and international levels to cooperate on security.

The letter comes after a series of incidents where AI agents attacked companies—most notably the Hugging Face incident, in which an OpenAI agent autonomously broke out of its sandboxed environment. Similar break-ins involving agents from Anthropic and Meta have reinforced the argument that cybersecurity has been fundamentally altered and that bold new commercial solutions are necessary. The signatories advocate for a collective response, forming new partnerships to raise security standards and tackle emerging threats.

The AI companies that signed the letter face a conflicted position: they are actively developing ever more advanced models while also launching defensive programs, such as OpenAI‘s Daybreak, Anthropic‘s Mythos, and Microsoft’s new Perception platform. The letter underscores the urgency of collaboration even as these firms continue to push the frontiers of AI capability.
