Bloomberg has reported new details about OpenAI‘s upcoming hardware device, previously described as an AI-powered smart speaker meant to serve as the physical embodiment of ChatGPT. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, the device will be donut-shaped, allowing users to carry it around their home and place it on surfaces like a bedside table or kitchen counter. It will be built from high-quality metal with a premium look and will feature distinct moving parts, though the purpose of those moving parts has not been explained. The device is expected to sell for between $300 and $400 per unit, significantly more than Amazon’s smart home speakers, which range from roughly $40 to $240.

Releasing a smart home device fits OpenAI‘s strategy of further integrating ChatGPT into users’ daily lives. However, the smart speaker market has historically been difficult to turn into a profitable business, and the reported price point could be a barrier to broad adoption. The device is being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, and is expected to launch sometime in 2027.

OpenAI‘s push into hardware has also drawn legal pushback. Apple has sued OpenAI, alleging that the company stole trade secrets related to the hardware development. OpenAI has denied the allegations.
