OpenAI to merge ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs, keep Codex separate

OpenAI is gearing up to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside the ChatGPT desktop app, according to an email sent to users. The change is meant to address the confusion caused by having separate ChatGPT and Codex sections, plus Chat and Work tabs within ChatGPT. OpenAI said the merged experience will initially be available to select users for feedback before it is rolled out widely.

The email describes the goal as letting users move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place. Users would be able to bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

OpenAI also said that with this transition, both ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool. The company stated the change won’t impact most users, but depending on usage and model, some people might need to wait for resets more frequently.

The move follows a similar change by rival Anthropic, which merged Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September.
