OpenAI Launches Health in ChatGPT for U.S. Users

OpenAI is rolling out Health in ChatGPT to U.S. users aged 18 and older on web and iOS. The feature allows users to securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records from U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, or Function Health. Once connected, ChatGPT can draw on that information in relevant conversations—comparing lab results over time, summarizing changes since a last visit, or factoring a dietary restriction into meal planning. More than 70% of health-related conversations among early testers occurred outside a dedicated health space, so the new design lets users bring health context into any chat. Health remains the sidebar hub for managing connections, viewing trends, and revisiting past conversations.

Conversations that use connected medical records or Apple Health data are not used to train foundation models or target ads, regardless of model-training settings. Users control when ChatGPT accesses that information per-request or by always allowing it. Disconnecting an account deletes synced data within 30 days. OpenAI also notes that memories drawn from health conversations are not created directly from connected medical records or Apple Health.

On the model side, GPT‑5.5 Instant (available on Free) and GPT‑5.6 Sol (paid) are the models behind the experience. GPT‑5.5 Instant performed comparably to prior frontier Thinking models on OpenAI’s most challenging health evaluations. GPT‑5.6 Sol further improved on tasks requiring multi-step reasoning, clear communication, and appropriate escalation. Hundreds of physicians participated in developing realistic scenarios and rubrics for evaluation. The release emphasizes that ChatGPT still makes mistakes and does not replace professional medical care.
