OpenAI launches ChatGPT office suite features at Dev Day

OpenAI announced several ChatGPT features aimed at office workers during its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco. The announcements mark a further push into workplace software, a space where OpenAI‘s longtime partner Microsoft has historically dominated. The most notable new feature is Space, a shared workspace inside ChatGPT. Sam Altman described it as a place where pages and files live together like in a drive, but with a livelier feel. Space is designed for coworkers to collaborate with the chatbot and with Dots, which are AI agent personas that can perform tasks on a user’s behalf. Users can instruct a page to check a team channel and update itself with the results, showing how the workspace blends document management with agent-driven automation.
OpenAI also introduced Pages, a word processor built for both human and agent collaboration. The company positions it as a new type of document. Users can write, research, generate charts, create images, or visualize information within Pages, making it a direct alternative to established tools like Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Additionally, OpenAI unveiled collaborative slides, a PowerPoint-style feature that can be generated simply by talking about the desired content within ChatGPT. Once slides exist, multiple workers and agents can edit them together, leave comments, and refine the material. These features collectively resemble a full office suite embedded in ChatGPT.
The competitive dynamic is notable because OpenAI and Microsoft have been close partners, yet OpenAI is now directly challenging Microsoft‘s core workplace software business. At the same time, Microsoft and other software companies like Salesforce are moving in the opposite direction, embedding more AI into their own products. Over the past year, both Microsoft and Salesforce have released a series of AI products as the software industry adjusts to the changing landscape driven by AI capabilities.
