OpenAI Academy and OATS Launch AI Skills Jam for Older Adults

OpenAI Academy, in partnership with Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP, launched the Older Adults AI Skills Jam—a free, in-person learning experience aimed at helping older adults use ChatGPT confidently and safely in everyday life. The Jam is part of a multi-year effort with OATS, delivered through its flagship program Senior Planet, to build practical AI skills and enhance online safety for older adults.
The initiative addresses a real need: data shows older adults are increasingly turning to ChatGPT for practical guidance, information, and writing. In the U.S., the share of messages associated with people aged 55+ grew from 6% to nearly 10% in a year. The program focuses on tasks like planning a trip, understanding confusing letters or bills, spotting scams, pursuing hobbies, and staying connected with family.
Online safety is a core component. The workshop helps older adults recognize common scam warning signs, such as urgent language, secrecy, and suspicious links, and teaches a simple rule: pause, think, and ask. It also encourages using ChatGPT as an extra layer of scrutiny for evaluating suspicious messages, emails, and websites. The source notes that tens of millions of times a week, people ask ChatGPT for help with such evaluations. This education complements OpenAI’s broader work to prevent, detect, and disrupt fraud and scams.
The Older Adults AI Skills Jam will take place in 10 communities nationwide, in partnership with local organizations supporting older adults. Locations include Senior Planet sites in Denver, Miami, San Antonio, Montgomery County, and Queens; The Mirowitz Center in St. Louis; Senior Community Services in the Twin Cities; The Nashville Public Library and FiftyForward; Fresno EOC; and LEARN Idaho in Boise.
The Jam is part of OpenAI Academy‘s broader effort to make AI literacy practical and accessible, building on previous events with nonprofits, small businesses, and K–12 educators. The program is designed to shape future learning resources for older adults, ensuring the benefits of this technology reach everyone.
