Microsoft unveils RTX Spark Surface PCs with Windows 11 Execution Containers

Nvidia first announced RTX Spark-based Windows PC agreements in June, but Microsoft filled in the hardware details this week at a Tech Week event in San Francisco. The new Surface Laptop Ultra comes in two base configurations: one starting at $2,600 and a more powerful chip starting at $3,700, with memory and storage options pushing the price to $5,900. Microsoft says the highest-end configuration is already out of stock. Alongside the laptop, Microsoft introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation, starting at $6,000, which ships with VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.

Both products are positioned as AI- and agent-ready machines designed to run models on-device locally with CPU, GPU, unified memory, and hardware changes such as improved cooling. They also run a revamped Windows 11 that adds “Execution Containers,” a feature Microsoft says makes it easier to sandbox AI agents. Nadella said the feature will be available to all Windows 11 users, and explained the broader shift: models alone do little without orchestration, external memory, context, and an action space. Microsoft is building this as a Windows platform capability, not just for its own apps but for third-party agents.

The target audience is developers; Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off the Surface machines for MacBook Pro trade-ins, reflecting macOS’s popularity among developers and AI agent enthusiasts. The company also notes the Surface PCs can handle content creation, video processing, and gaming because of their graphics hardware. Dell separately confirmed specs for its previously announced XPS 16 Creator Edition PC, now available for pre-order at Best Buy for $3,800 with October delivery.
