Meta’s Muse Glimmer: Open-Weight Model for Local AI Agents

Meta released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight 30-billion parameter model designed to run AI agents locally on consumer hardware like a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU.

The model supports text and images, trained across more than 100 languages. It is essentially an open version of Meta‘s more powerful closed model Muse Spark, which debuted in April.

Glimmer’s weights are available under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to download and modify them.

The model can perform multi-step tasks such as calling tools, writing and debugging code, working with files and screenshots, and executing extended workflows.

Meta envisions Glimmer being used for managing schedules, drafting messages, and organizing files—tasks requiring extensive access to personal data.

By processing data locally rather than sending it to the cloud, Meta is building toward a more privacy-sensitive personal agent that is designed to be always-on and operable without an internet connection.

This release provides the clearest picture yet of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of personal superintelligence, which he argues should empower individuals rather than stay concentrated in a few companies.

In a new letter, Zuckerberg reiterated that distributing superintelligence widely could begin a new era of personal empowerment.

However, the distinction between open Glimmer and closed Muse Spark shows where Meta is drawing a line: the smaller model can be owned and modified by users, while the more powerful intelligence remains under the company’s control.

Permission is not ownership.

Meta continues to evaluate safety concerns when deciding which models to release openly, as Zuckerberg previously warned the company would have to be careful about this balance.
