Meta pulls Instagram AI photo modification feature after backlash

Meta launched Muse Image, an AI image generator built by its Meta Superintelligence Labs unit, which included a feature allowing users to modify photos from public Instagram accounts by @-mentioning them.
The feature did not notify users when their content was referenced, raising immediate concerns about consent and misuse.
The company’s failure to anticipate the backlash exposed a persistent tension: pushing generative AI features into consumer platforms without sufficient safeguards against abuse.
This is the same pattern of deploy-then-retreat that has plagued AI features on social media, particularly around the generation of non-consensual imagery.
