Legora: The Agentic Operating System for Legal Work

Legora, founded in Stockholm in 2023, is building what CEO and co-founder Max Junestrand calls the agentic operating system for legal work. The company targets legal teams whose time constraints keep valuable work undone, such as a junior lawyer facing an impossible overnight contract review. Legora provides those services on tap, and OpenAI has supported the effort since GPT-3.5 made many legal use cases feasible; OpenAI remains a key model provider for agentic work and large-scale document review.

Legora uses OpenAI technology internally as well, including ChatGPT Work, Codex and dots. CTO Jacob Lauritzen says coding agents let the team prototype 20 approaches at once and pick the best within days, and sometimes go from bug report to working fix in about five minutes by searching millions of log lines. Legora‘s own legal team also runs on the product: General Counsel Emma Kadri Bergström says an NDA playbook now gives a first pass on incoming agreements, cutting NDA review from about 20 percent of legal-team capacity to under 1 percent.

For customers, the change is not just faster completion of the same work. Alex Fortescue-Webb, Global Head of Legal Engineering, says due-diligence time and cost constraints traditionally force deep review of only the most valuable contracts; Legora‘s Tabular Review workflow can analyze thousands of contracts across multiple questions in minutes, surfacing risks outside the manually reviewed subset. Junestrand cites one Fortune 100 customer that reduced contract turnaround time by 90 percent, saved more than $20 million on external litigation and diligence, and returned 9.5 hours per lawyer each week. Legal teams can also use Legora through a ChatGPT plugin.

The article includes adoption lessons from Legora‘s experience: lead by using, start with the problem, build a network of champions, be ready to rebuild product assumptions as models improve, and design for trust from the start. Looking ahead, Lauritzen expects agents to handle longer-running tasks with greater context and autonomy, such as due diligence across millions of pages overnight, and increasingly fast models to enable real-time lawyer/AI collaboration. That means the roadmap must keep moving; Lauritzen says model improvements force him to reconsider it on a biweekly basis. Bergström sees AI changing legal teams from bottlenecks into business partners, and Junestrand calls it the best time in history to be a lawyer.
