Granola launches dictation feature to rival Wispr

Voice AI startups are converging on the same feature set. Granola, best known as a meeting notetaker, has launched a dictation feature for Mac. Users press the Fn key, start speaking, and the tool cleans up and formats their speech, posting the final text. The feature works across all apps, so users can dictate notes, prompts, emails, and messages. Granola‘s announcement touts unlimited words for free, and the company says iOS and Windows support will arrive soon.

The move follows Wispr, known for dictation, launching a meeting notetaker months earlier. Granola and Wispr are valued at $1.5 billion and $2 billion, respectively. Their strategies differ: Granola remains focused on meeting-related automation and note-taking, while Wispr is building its own models through a research lab exploring different human-computer interfaces.

This convergence goes beyond Granola and Wispr. Other voice startups, including Fireflies, Speechify, and Monologue, have expanded into multi-feature apps that combine meeting note-taking and dictation. Earlier in the year, the typical approach was a focused app that does one thing well; now these companies are thinking about how to get more out of capturing users’ speech.
