Google Public Sector and SUNY Launch AI Platform to Accelerate Research

At Gemini at Work, Google Public Sector and the State University of New York (SUNY) announced the SUNY AI Platform, a secure AI and high-performance computing environment built on Google Cloud with Gemini Enterprise. The platform is initially available across nine of SUNY’s most research-intensive campuses. It is designed to help researchers move from hypothesis to discovery faster and to prepare New York’s students and workforce for an AI-driven economy.

The announcement frames the work as part of the agentic AI era, where intelligent systems can process massive datasets, run complex workflows, and accelerate the pace of scientific discovery. SUNY researchers using the platform are tackling challenges such as improving weather prediction, detecting water quality issues, sequencing DNA for cancer treatments, and processing high-resolution brain scans to aid diagnosis. The platform centralizes storage, high-powered computing, Gemini Enterprise, and more than 200 trusted AI models, so individual teams and campuses do not need to assemble those capabilities independently. It gives researchers of all technical backgrounds a common foundation for simplifying data analysis, enabling collaboration across institutions, and applying consistent governance and responsible AI practices.

SUNY is also providing system-wide access to Google’s self-paced, industry-recognized AI credentials at no cost to students and faculty. Each course takes 5-10 hours, requires no prior experience, and builds practical skills such as writing effective prompts, solving complex problems, and using AI tools responsibly. SUNY is additionally working to embed Google Career Certificates into academic programs so students can graduate with job-ready technical capabilities alongside their degrees.

The collaboration pairs access to advanced technology with the skills and institutional capacity needed to put it to work responsibly. Free AI learning tools and resources are available at suny.edu/google, and the announcement points to the Google Public Sector Summit on October 20 as a related follow-up event.
