
Google Home gets MCP server for AI agent control

Google has started rolling out early access to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for its Google Home ecosystem, allowing any MCP-compatible AI agent to securely control connected smart home devices and access event history. Supported agents include Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity. With natural language instructions, users can review camera summaries, monitor smart home activity, control connected devices, and build custom smart home dashboards.
Setting up the integration requires creating a Google Cloud project and configuring it to use Home MCP, then providing the MCP configuration details to the chosen agent. The agent guides the user through sign-in and permission granting, and a setup guide is available in the Google Home Developer Center. The system supports any device in the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest doorbells and thermostats, as well as Works with Google Home and Matter devices like light bulbs.
Google already supports MCP across its Cloud and data platforms, developer tools, and Workspace, but this Home integration is aimed more directly at consumers experimenting with AI agents for everyday tasks. Access will roll out starting today and over the coming weeks to subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced in the U.S., a $20-per-month tier that includes longer event-based video history, descriptive notifications, video search, and daily summaries. Google did not comment on whether or when the MCP server would reach other subscription tiers or markets, and it is soliciting feedback from early adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community.
