Figma Specs, code layers, and Payload integration for AI agents

At its first Config event in India, Figma announced a set of features aimed at giving AI agents clearer guardrails when working inside the design platform. The centerpiece is Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor that lets teams define their design language in a structured document. The spec can stand alone or live inside the canvas, and users can reference canvas elements, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs. Teams can also attach design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines to build a centralized context system that agents can consult before generating or modifying work. This is positioned as a way to manage the non-deterministic nature of AI and push it toward more predictable outcomes, especially after Figma recently expanded access to its agent on canvas.

The company also advanced its code-related tools. The code layers feature, which brings coding into designs on canvas for more interactive prototypes, was previously announced in private beta in June and is now available in public beta. Users can ask the agent to convert a design into code or modify part of the code to iterate on a prototype.

Figma chief design officer Loredana Crisan framed the broader motivation by noting that far more lines of code are being produced today than before, but the number of releases has not grown at the same pace. In her view, much of that code is not necessarily meant to ship but is built to discover and design the product, which makes Figma the place where software teams decide what to build.

On the platform side, Figma said it is adding support for over 20 new tools through its Model Context Protocol (MCP), including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam. Separately, the company is integrating Payload, the open-source headless CMS it acquired last year, with its Figma Make product. That integration is aimed at generating dynamic websites and managing content directly from Figma. Figma reported that Payload downloads have increased sixfold in the last 12 months.

The India event also highlighted the company’s investment in the region. Figma opened its first office in India late last year with sales, partnership, go-to-market, and product support functions. The company said India is its biggest user market outside the United States, and that the platform works with 40% of India’s top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
