DoorDash says AI agents have placed only ‘several hundred’ orders

DoorDash said during its third-quarter earnings call that third-party AI agents have placed only ‘several hundred’ orders in total, a tiny fraction of the average of 3 million deliveries the company cites in its 2025 report. CEO Tony Xu described the area as still very dynamic, adding: ‘you never want to fight gravity. But at the same time, you don’t want to be delusional.’ He said users still predominantly order through the DoorDash app, while the company wants to learn more about agentic use cases and maintain a healthy relationship with third-party agent makers like Muse, Instinct, and Fo. Xu also flagged a possible future opportunity to advertise inside such agents.
DoorDash has its own agentic ordering efforts, including a text-to-order agent launched in September, a CLI agent introduced in July, and the Ask DoorDash chatbot launched in June, which accepts orders through prompts and photos. It also released an MCP to enable ordering from other chatbots for corporate ordering. The broader ecosystem is still unsettled: Amazon has been blocking personal agents, while Walmart has laid out a red carpet for them in hopes of taking business from competitors. The low order count suggests AI-agent-driven commerce is not taking over just yet.
