Deezer adds a toggle to filter out AI-generated music

Deezer is building a user-facing toggle to filter AI-generated music out of its streaming platform, with a launch expected before the end of the year. The company announced the feature on Tuesday, saying that enabling the toggle will remove AI-generated tracks, albums, and related artists from search results. CEO Alexis Lanternier said the company has seen clear user demand for the ability to avoid AI music and wants to let listeners focus on human creators if they choose. He also described the sharp growth of AI music on the platform as one of the catalysts for the feature.

Deezer‘s move builds on work it started last year, when it introduced AI-detection tooling and began tracking uploads of AI-generated tracks. At that time, AI music accounted for 10% of daily uploads. By July, Deezer reported that AI-generated tracks made up more than half of daily uploads, averaging 90,000 AI tracks per day. The company also cited a survey from last year in which about 45% of Deezer customers said they wanted a way to remove AI music from their feeds.

Other streaming services have taken different approaches to AI-generated content. Bandcamp has banned AI tracks outright, while Tidal stopped monetizing AI music uploads. Spotify has taken a lighter approach, mostly tagging AI tracks and artists more prominently. Apple Music was reported in August to be looking into labeling AI tracks by the end of the year. In addition to platform-level measures, users are also turning to independent tracking systems to identify AI music.
