OpenAI has launched an Apple Messages plug-in for ChatGPT that lets users connect their Messages inbox to the chatbot. According to the announcement, the plug-in can sort, analyze, and edit messages directly from ChatGPT, and it also works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, extending the feature to professional workflows. A commercial for the plug-in shows a user asking ChatGPT to suggest follow-up messages to contacts based on messages received the previous day. Users can also ask ChatGPT to delete messages, draft and send messages on their behalf, or search for information buried deep in message history.

The feature raises privacy questions. OpenAI told Bloomberg that the plug-in runs locally on a user’s machine and that it “doesn’t create an index of all someone’s messages,” though the specifics of what that means aren’t immediately clear. For message sending, OpenAI discourages turning on persistent approval, warning that doing so “removes your final chance to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as you,” and encourages users to keep an eye on what ChatGPT is doing.
