Atlassian and OpenAI expand partnership, bringing GPT-6 models to Rovo

Atlassian and OpenAI are expanding the partnership they began in 2023, with a new agreement that brings frontier models in the GPT-6 family across Atlassian‘s platform to power AI experiences and agents that help teams plan, build, and deliver work. The models will also power Rovo, which combines OpenAI intelligence with Atlassian‘s Teamwork Graph, an enterprise context layer connecting people, projects, documents, and decisions so AI understands how a company works.

The agreement also deepens Atlassian‘s own use of OpenAI tools. More than 3,000 Atlassian developers use Codex across terminals, IDEs, and code review workflows; through Atlassian plugins powered by the Teamwork Graph, Codex users can access relevant work items and technical documentation while writing, testing, and shipping software. Atlassian gains expanded access to OpenAI‘s latest models, including GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 series. OpenAI, in turn, continues to rely on Jira to manage its critical workflows.

The announcement illustrates the value with a product-manager scenario: someone preparing a launch asks Rovo whether the team is on track. Rovo draws on the Teamwork Graph to connect Jira tickets, Confluence documents, and relevant discussions, then identifies engineering blockers, flags missed milestones, and surfaces decisions that need attention. OpenAI models convert that information into a launch-readiness assessment with recommended next steps.

The integration extends beyond Atlassian‘s products. Atlassian and Teamwork Graph CLI plugins for ChatGPT and Codex let customers connect the assistants to existing workflows subject to permissions. Atlassian also launched a plugin extension that brings Jira work items, Confluence content, and people directly into ChatGPT and Codex prompts, plus a pinned Atlassian Home surface that shows assigned work, recent Looms, projects, and Bitbucket pull requests.

Looking ahead, the companies are exploring deeper Jira integrations so teams can assign work to AI agents, track progress, capture decisions, and review results. Paired with DX, Atlassian‘s platform for measuring developer productivity, this could let engineering leaders gauge AI’s impact on development speed, cycle time, and developer experience while keeping humans in control.
