Anthropic commits 5% of shares to new public benefit fund

Anthropic announced a “public benefit fund” structured as a wholly-owned entity within the company, with 5% of its shares committed to supporting projects for societal good. Anthropic says it can contribute an additional 2% for every 50% increase in Anthropic’s value. Possible uses include large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. Anthropic frames the fund as complementing its existing $200 million commitment to study AI’s impact on the job market, noting that “Given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed.”

The announcement arrives as the AI industry faces negative public sentiment, which CEO Dario Amodei has described as “fundamentally a crisis of trust.” Anthropic hasn’t detailed who will decide which public benefits get funded, saying it will share more information about structure and governance in the coming months.
