Airbnb says AI cuts feature launch time by 60%, tests AI search toggle

Airbnb is rapidly adopting AI for internal product development, even as it takes a measured approach to consumer-facing AI features. During its second-quarter earnings call, CEO Brian Chesky reported that AI has helped the company reduce the time from concept to launch by 60% and increase the number of features shipped by nearly 80% compared to the same period last year. The company previously stated that AI now writes 60% of its code. AI has been deployed in areas such as search, sign-up, checkout, and payments, and has also enabled faster onboarding flows for hosts.

On the consumer side, Airbnb has been slower to introduce AI, limiting it so far to review summaries and listing highlights. Chesky has argued that a chatbot-like interface is not suitable for travel use cases. However, during the earnings call, he announced that Airbnb will finally begin testing an AI-powered search feature. To avoid disrupting existing users, the new search will be optional via a toggle. Users can type natural language queries and receive results in a visual format, with AI-generated titles and personalized highlights on product description pages.

Customer support is a major area of AI deployment. Airbnb launched its AI-powered bot in North America in 2025 and has since expanded it to over 50 languages, with plans to add voice call support later this year. The company reported that nearly 45% of customer issues that begin with the AI agent are resolved without human intervention. As a result, support cost per booking decreased 16% year-over-year. Financially, Airbnb posted strong quarterly results: revenue rose 17% year-over-year to $3.6 billion, and adjusted EBITDA increased 21% to $1.3 billion.
