Google has announced new quality requirements for Android apps, driven by industry-wide memory chip shortages caused by the AI data center boom.

The company is establishing performance thresholds for dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage, along with code optimization requirements to prevent app slowdowns and crashes.

New diagnostic tools, including a Memory Limiter feature, will help developers monitor and reduce memory consumption. Developers have until February 2027 to meet these thresholds.

Separately, all Play Store apps must support Zero Tap Sign-In during device migrations by April 2027, using the Android Restore Credentials API.

The changes reflect Google‘s efforts to maintain a quality user experience on devices where memory availability is increasingly constrained, particularly for low-end devices.
