Uber: AI agents booked only four rides in busiest week

On Uber’s third-quarter earnings call, the company disclosed that AI-agent-driven transaction volume remains negligible. During its busiest week in October — the week of Halloween — only four rides were booked through an AI agent, and only 500 Uber Eats orders were placed by an AI agent, out of roughly 320 million total trips and orders across Uber and Uber Eats. CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy shared the figures with analysts.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described the numbers as “very, very early and very limited traction” and said the company hopes to see more. The low volumes stand in contrast to the growing hype around personal AI agents that handle tasks on users’ behalf. The article notes the rise of startups like Instinct, which raised its latest round at a $10 billion valuation, and Meta’s Muse app, which reached the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store and topped 10 million users. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI (Grok) also now offer their own agents.

Other public companies are seeing similarly early-stage adoption. DoorDash said on its own earnings call last week that it had received only a few hundred orders from AI agents so far, with most customers still ordering through the DoorDash app.

Khosrowshahi also noted that booking a ride in Uber’s app takes an average of 50 seconds, and reordering a favorite food takes about 90 seconds, suggesting an AI agent may not necessarily save users much time yet.

Despite the limited traction, he remained optimistic about agents as another way to reach Uber’s platform, calling them a “net positive” for demand. He said there are currently around eight major AI assistants on the market, expects that number to grow beyond 10 over time, and added that “every single AI system company is talking to us.”
