Figma expands MCP support despite Dylan Field’s protocol concerns

Figma is expanding support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard for connecting AI agents to external data sources and tools, even though co-founder Dylan Field has public misgivings about the protocol.
At Figma‘s first Config conference held in India, the company announced 20 new MCP partners, including Amp, ClickUp, Dia, Junie by JetBrains, Linear, Meta Muse, Mistral, Notion, OpenCode, and Sarvam Agents.
Field’s concerns predate the announcement. Days earlier, one of MCP’s co-creators complained that Figma did not support the open-source tool Pi. In response, Field pointed out that Anthropic, the creator of the MCP standard, does not expose its own artifacts or other cloud resources via MCP. He wrote on X: “The debate is framed as open vs closed. Everyone always prefers open… obviously. And meanwhile issues of asymmetric context sharing are ignored.” He later added that Figma plans to support Pi.
At a media briefing, Field said that while Figma wants to open up its ecosystem, he does not think MCP is a perfect protocol. “It has tons of room for improvement,” he said, and argued that the protocol is “advantaged more to frontier labs.” He also said he wants users who simply want a protocol to use their Figma data to be able to do so.
Figma‘s CEO explained the company’s cautious approach to full openness: the more data Figma exposes through MCP, the higher the risk of abuse. Even though most users do not intend to use MCP or Figma data maliciously, the company says it must account for those potential risks.
