Google Play now enables private vibe-coded Android apps

Google announced that Android users can now run their own vibe-coded apps on their devices through Google Play while keeping them completely private. The personal apps are launched with a standard Google account, do not appear in Play search or listing pages, and are visible only to the creator. The feature is initially available in the U.S. to users 18 and older. Google positioned this as a response to people using AI to build custom apps for personal needs, since previously using such an app on Android required publishing to the Play Store, where it could reach roughly 3 billion users. That constraint pushed many vibe-coders toward web apps instead of native Android apps.
To use the feature, an Android owner can vibe-code an app in Google AI Studio and then launch it for their own use. These personal apps still must comply with Google Play‘s existing policies. In the coming months, Google plans to let users share their creations with a network of trusted friends, such as family members or a child’s T-ball league, without public Play Store publishing. If an app gains broader popularity, there will be a path to shift it to a publicly published app after completing trust and safety reviews.
Alongside this, Google is introducing AI-driven Play Store curation. A new Game Finder feature will provide personalized game recommendations based on a user’s preferences and Google’s knowledge from its game community of 1.2 billion players; it will first roll out in the U.S. in English. Users will also be able to curate game lists, post questions in a new Community Posts section, and join 48-hour gaming challenges called Sprints. The Play Store’s Ask Play assistant is being updated to compare similar applications, and Google Play apps and games are being more deeply integrated into Gemini conversations. Separately, Google Play is adding an age-range feature that lets parents share a child’s age range—not exact birthdate—with developers for age-appropriate experiences.
