Meta’s Muse Outpaces ChatGPT’s Early Mobile Launch in First 12 Days

New third-party data suggests Meta’s AI assistant app, Muse, is off to a faster start on mobile than ChatGPT was. Estimates from market intelligence firm Apptopia compare the first twelve days of each app’s availability. Because the two launched differently, Apptopia aligned the numbers by focusing only on iOS in the U.S. and Canada. ChatGPT arrived globally but on iOS only, while Muse launched on both iOS and Android but only in the U.S. and Canada. In that matched subset, Muse saw 1.8 million downloads versus ChatGPT’s 1.3 million.

The comparison has limits. Overall, Muse recorded 2.8 million total installs globally in its first twelve days. Apptopia also estimates U.S. daily active users for Muse at 642,000, compared with 231,000 for ChatGPT at the same point; even on iOS alone, Muse is higher with 359,000 daily active users.

Muse has also climbed the U.S. App Store, moving from No. 2 overall shortly after launch to No. 1, according to Business Insider. That put it above ChatGPT. Another analytics firm, Appfigures, had previously reported Muse crossed 1 million downloads.

Notably, Apptopia only provides third-party estimates, not Meta’s internal figures. The firm also lacks direct visibility into Meta’s cross-promotion and ads, but it found over 95% of Muse users are also Facebook users and 63% are Instagram users. Meta has perfected cross-promotion before with Instagram’s Threads, which now has over 500 million users, and Muse connects with Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, suggesting a similar boost.

Meta has not yet shared official figures on Muse’s early adoption.
