Meta’s AI assistant Muse has been blocked as a shopper on Amazon.com. On Sunday night, users trying to buy goods through Muse began seeing an error that read: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.” Anyone trying to buy something on Amazon through the AI agent will have to find it elsewhere.

The block can be read as a dispute between tech giants: Amazon runs its own foundation models and one of the most popular inference platforms, and it is under no legal obligation to open its doors to a competitor’s agent. But the article also points to substantive reasons for the move. If Muse places a bad order, Amazon would be left to clean it up, dealing with both an angry customer and an angry vendor. Muse has one of the lower hallucination rates among AI models, but it is still far from zero. Even if Amazon sees opportunity in agent-driven commerce, it may want to wait a few more release cycles before rolling anything out.
