Alongside news of its new AI-focused subscription plans, Meta announced on Tuesday that it will now let users choose an AI coding agent to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging. The new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that connects agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Previously, setup required juggling the Developer Console, Meta‘s Business Manager, the API reference, and an editor.

According to Meta, the agent can handle the busywork: creating the company’s WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying its phone number, registering for Cloud API access, checking the business’s Terms of Service, and more. Users can also ask the agent to create or edit messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor things that may have quietly failed before, including Terms of Service, payment method, and Business Verification. During setup, Meta‘s other MCP server, Meta Social Technologies MCP, can help discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors. Meta is extending an existing MCP lineup that already covered ads and app configuration; other companies including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft also offer MCP servers for AI-agent integrations.
