OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a deal worth over $300 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019, is based in Los Altos, California, and had previously raised about $30 million from investors. The founders, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, are former Apple engineers who led the team behind Apple’s Portrait Mode. That background shapes the company’s approach: instead of using AI to edit photos after capture, Glass Imaging uses neural networks to learn about individual camera systems across different smartphone models, producing better images at the moment the shutter clicks.

The acquisition fits with broader reports that OpenAI is working on hardware, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive revealed that they had been collaborating on a device startup called io, and OpenAI later bought Ive’s company for $6.5 billion.
