Superhuman is acquiring Fathom, a Y Combinator-backed meeting notetaker, joining a wave of productivity platforms that are moving into meeting capture as a foundation for agentic work. The logic behind the move: AI-powered productivity tools automate work when users type prompts and create workflows, but proactive automation requires the topics and action items discussed in meetings.

Fathom was founded in 2020 and has raised over $30 million, valued at $94 million in 2024 per PitchBook data cited by TechCrunch. Its investors include Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures, and Maven Ventures, and its cap table lists individuals such as Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt. The notetaker’s generous free plan has produced over 400,000 monthly active users, and the company says more than 1 million people have recorded meetings to date.

Superhuman tested a notetaker internally with select users earlier this year, but ultimately chose to acquire a finished product and integrate it with its AI-centered productivity suite. CEO Shishir Mehrotra told TechCrunch the internal work boosted confidence in demand while revealing how much depth the category requires: “A lot of these products make the job feel really easy, but it’s actually quite tricky to do a great job in all parts.” He said he was impressed with the technical intricacies of Fathom‘s team without elaborating, and teased that a notetaker could let Superhuman surface meeting context in real time.

Competition in meeting notetaking is intense; startups like Granola, Read AI, and new entrant Wispr have raised millions. Venture-backed notetakers are under market pressure to do more than notetaking, a factor in the acquisition. Fathom CEO Richard White cited Superhuman‘s 40 million user base as a major distribution opportunity: “If we were to operate Fathom as a standalone company, we would have to build a lot of things that are already in the Superhuman platform.”

Superhuman already ships an email client, a docs app, a calendar, a database solution, and a newly launched AI agent builder platform. With a meeting notetaker at the center, Superhuman can draft emails, update data entries, schedule follow-up meetings, and have AI agents begin work and extract insights from meeting data.
