Data agent in ChatGPT Work lets employees analyze company data directly

OpenAI introduced a Data agent in ChatGPT Work aimed at helping people answer business questions directly from company data, without waiting for reports, writing queries, or learning a separate analytics tool. The agent connects to approved data sources including Amazon Redshift, Datadog, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, MongoDB, Snowflake, and more, and can also bring files and documents from Google Drive and SharePoint into the analysis. It interprets data using the organization’s business terms, metric definitions, custom calculations, and data relationships, drawing from semantic layers and trusted sources such as Databricks Genie Ontology, dbt, GitHub, Snowflake Horizon, and BI dashboards. Enterprise administrators choose which data connections are available and which roles can use them, and queries enforce the connected account’s existing permissions, including table, row, and column restrictions.
Users can direct and refine the analysis in one conversation, ask follow-up questions, and review the evidence behind each finding. The agent can turn an analysis into an interactive dashboard with built-in visualizations that teams can edit, share, and refresh, and brand guidelines can be applied to tailor outputs to the organization’s look and feel. It can also build and interact with dashboards in Omni, Oracle BI, Power BI, Sigma, Tableau, and ThoughtSpot, letting users direct the work in plain language inside tools their teams already use. ChatGPT Work can recommend next steps, identify who needs to be involved, share findings through Slack or email, and carry out approved actions through connected tools.
OpenAI says the underlying capabilities are already used broadly across the company: nearly all of its product team and over two-thirds of its go-to-market organization use data agents in ChatGPT Work to analyze company data themselves. The internal data team enabled this by creating shared business definitions, setting access rules, and putting safeguards in place for sensitive data. Alpha program participants including NTT Data, Thermo Fisher, and ServicePiston are using the Data agent to analyze sales and spending, catch reporting errors, and decide which opportunities to pursue and how to staff them.
The Data agent is listed as Data in the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work. Administrators can make it available or install it for their teams through Workspace settings > Plugins, and can enable and configure relevant data-source plugins such as Databricks and Snowflake. If Data is not already installed, users can find it in the Plugins directory and select Install plugin, complete any required account-connection steps, and start a conversation with @Data to ask a business question. Example prompts include diagnosing a metric change, designing a KPI framework, and creating a leadership readout with actuals, comparisons, drivers, caveats, and recommended actions.
