The U.S. Department of Defense has launched two custom generative AI tools—ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government—on its GenAI.

mil secure portal, giving three million civilian and military personnel access to frontier models tailored for warfighter needs. GenAI.

mil, which already offered Google Gemini, is designed to let Department of Defense employees use commercial AI without sending sensitive government data through consumer channels; the official military versions are exempt from standard data collection.

According to the Pentagon, the portal has onboarded over 1.7 million unique users out of 3 million personnel.

ChatGPT Mil, part of OpenAI’s OpenAI for Government program, provides a familiar chat, file, projects, and custom GPT experience focused on unclassified administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy.

Grok for Government is described in more militaristic terms, offering productivity gains, knowledge continuity, and secure collaboration to help the military execute missions faster and with greater precision across operational contexts like market research and supply chain management.

The Pentagon also noted the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model; Anthropic was labeled a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration after it refused to grant the Pentagon unrestricted use of its AI tools, insisting on safety guardrails.

This dispute is currently being litigated. The Defense Department has also struck deals with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI to bolster its AI capabilities.
