Uber Derisks Hybrid AI with Cloud Interconnect Application Awareness

Uber, like the cities it serves, constantly evolves to manage traffic and prevent congestion.

To ensure reliable application traffic across its hybrid cloud, Uber partnered with Google Cloud to deploy Application Awareness on Cloud Interconnect, an industry-first feature that classifies traffic into six classes and enforces strict priority or bandwidth-sharing policies.

This allows Uber to protect business-critical applications from network congestion without resorting to expensive bandwidth overprovisioning.

By leveraging DSCP marking and configured queuing profiles, Uber can prioritize real-time traffic during peak events, reduce latency for sensitive workloads, and lower total cost of ownership.

The feature also enabled Uber to confidently migrate significant workloads to Google Cloud, as it provided the network-level guarantees needed to maintain service continuity.

Harry Liu, Director of Engineering at Uber, emphasized that this capability was key to enabling strategic workload migration and maintaining reliability during global demand spikes.

The deployment in Phoenix and Ashburn demonstrated that application awareness addresses the shortcomings of standard interconnect solutions, offering a blueprint for other enterprises facing similar hybrid and multicloud challenges.
