Anthropic has changed Claude’s memory system so chat and Claude Cowork no longer require repeated rebriefing. The two experiences now share one memory, meaning anything Claude learned in one area is available in the other. Anthropic is also making memory visible: users can read, edit, or delete what Claude has retained on any topic.

Previously, a user could develop ideas over time in chat, then have to re-enter all the context when moving into Cowork to take action. The update makes Claude feel like one continuous assistant instead of two separate products. Anthropic’s example is drafting a manager update or conference agenda in Cowork: because of past conversations, Claude would already know details such as headcount, city, and speakers without needing them re-entered.

Another change is when memories are formed. Instead of summarizing a conversation only when it ends, Claude now adds topics to memory as the chat happens. This keeps chat and Cowork in sync more quickly, even while a conversation is still ongoing, and makes it easier to move back and forth between research and execution.

On privacy, Anthropic states Claude will not store personal or sensitive information by default, including health data, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, and gender identity. Users can opt in by enabling “include sensitive topics in memory,” and the app will notify them whenever a sensitive topic is saved. Certain items will never be saved, such as government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, criminal history, immigration status, or anything violating its acceptable use policy.

The memory feature is enabled by default on Free, Pro, and Max plans across web, desktop, and mobile. On iOS and Android, users need to update to the latest app version.
