Google packs Search and Gemini with new AI study tools

Google announced a new set of study tools across Search and Gemini, including AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, practice quizzes, upload-based study documents, and a student hub. The update is Google’s latest push to make Gemini the AI assistant that students turn to when learning and studying, competing with OpenAI and education startups such as Knowt and Gauth.

On the Search side, queries such as “pH scale” now produce an interactive visual inside an AI Overview. A follow-up like “plot citrus fruits on the pH scale” triggers AI Mode to create a tailored interactive experience. Search can also generate practice quizzes across subjects such as science, math, humanities, and foreign languages; for example, a prompt asking for common SAT vocabulary produces an interactive quiz. In the coming weeks, Lens will roll out a learning experience that lets students upload a photo of what they are working on to get explanations, identify potential mistakes, and receive guidance if they are stuck. Students can also ask Search to create study documents from uploaded files, such as PDFs, slides, or handwritten notes, and receive a one-pager outlining key concepts.

On the Gemini side, a new feature lets students launch multi-step research reports in Gemini Live and close the chat while the research continues in the background. When the report is ready, they get a notification and can discuss the findings, or ask follow-up questions, using voice. Gemini can also now generate functional 3D simulations of student topics, so a prompt like “show me how DNA works in 3D” leads to an interactive DNA visual that users can rotate and zoom into. Gemini responses can include tables, grids, and simulations tailored to the prompt. Google also announced a student hub in the Gemini app that brings learning tools together in one place, letting users start a study notebook, create flashcards, and take practice quizzes.
