OpenAI Begins Testing Ads in ChatGPT with Privacy and User Control Principles

OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT, starting with a pilot in the U.S. for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers.
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers remain ad-free.
The test is guided by five principles: mission alignment (ads fund free and low-cost tiers, with an option to upgrade or opt out with fewer messages), answer independence (ads do not influence ChatGPT answers and are clearly labeled and separated), conversation privacy (advertisers cannot access chats, memories, or personal details; only aggregate performance data is shared), choice and control (users can dismiss ads, manage personalization, and delete ad data), and long-term value (ads aim to be relevant in conversational contexts).
Early results show no impact on consumer trust metrics, low dismissal rates, and improving relevance. The pilot is expanding beyond the U.S.
to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans to reach more markets in 2025. OpenAI is also expanding to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea.
The company emphasizes that answers remain independent, conversations private, and users retain meaningful control. Businesses interested in advertising can sign up for updates at openai.
