Improving GPT-5.6 Sol and Expanding GPT-5.6 Luna Access in ChatGPT

OpenAI announced updates to ChatGPT, improving GPT‑5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro users and expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna to free users with unlimited text chats. The changes aim to make everyday conversations more reliable and focused while broadening access.
For Plus and Pro users, GPT‑5.6 Sol in Chat now delivers more direct answers with tighter formatting, adapts detail level to the question, and offers helpful corrections instead of simple agreement. The model is also designed to make fewer factual errors, especially on dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions. In an internal evaluation of financial, medical, and legal prompts, responses containing at least one factual error were about 62% less common with GPT‑5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT‑5.6 Sol than with GPT‑5.5 Instant. A new slider lets users choose how much thought ChatGPT puts into each response, keeping it quick for everyday questions or increasing effort for planning, research, writing, coding, or decisions.
The update brings ChatGPT’s Instant and Thinking experiences closer together, creating a consistent tone and behavior. When moving from Instant to higher effort, it should feel like the model is taking extra time for a more comprehensive answer, not switching to a different model.
For free users, GPT‑5.6 Luna becomes the default model, with unlimited text chats. A new Think button allows access to higher reasoning for harder questions. This expansion is subject to abuse guardrails, and limits still apply for file uploads, images, and other tools.
OpenAI also detailed safety measures for users under 18. The model was trained to avoid romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and presenting itself as a substitute for real-world relationships. Age-appropriate boundaries were applied around sexual content, eating disorders, body-image risks, dangerous goods, activities, and graphic violence. The model encourages connection with trusted people when a teen may need support. These measures are reinforced with system-level protections and new evaluations for performance with users under 18.
The post frames this update as a step toward more abundant intelligence: making latest models widely available, improving answer usefulness and reliability, and removing rate limits on text chats for free users. GPT‑5.6 Sol optimized for everyday chats is only available in the Chat experience; the Work and Codex version remains unchanged.
