How news organizations are using AI to advance their missions

OpenAI published a post detailing how news organizations are using its technology to support journalism, reader engagement, and business operations. The piece is organized around three themes: empowering journalism, growing audiences and enhancing reader experiences, and strengthening the business of news.
The Associated Press uses OpenAI tools to help journalists scan overnight news and podcasts, support image and video verification, structure Supreme Court filings, surface stories from government datasets, and convert articles into broadcast scripts. POLITICO uses AI to analyze public documents and tailor client sales experiences. Axios built custom GPTs including ‘FOIA Refiner GPT’ to help reporters craft open-records requests, ‘O Caption! My Caption!’ for image captions, and ‘Axiomizer’ for sharper headlines. The Philadelphia Inquirer developed Scribe, which turns public meeting transcripts into categorized summaries scored by a newsworthiness framework. Axel Springer uses AI for one-tap listening at Business Insider and newsletter production at WELT. Le Monde incorporated its translation style book into ChatGPT to accelerate English-language publishing. PRISA Media uses OpenAI across editorial tools including a trend tracker built with Codex and a conversational assistant for EL PAÍS subscribers. The Daily Beast built Data Scouts, a Slack-integrated suite of agents that identify business opportunities and recommend next steps. The American Journalism Project’s Product & AI Studio helps local newsrooms like Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (CPI) build custom GPTs for donor communications, a workflow adopted by other nonprofits.
For audience growth, Condé Nast launched a Bon Appétit Test Kitchen Assistant that answers recipe and cooking questions. The Atlantic created a Lemony Snicket murder mystery game with ChatGPT-powered agents for each character. Eater launched an AI-powered restaurant search. Le Monde added audio to every article. The San Francisco Standard built an AI-first subscriber app with personalized briefings. BILD’s assistant Hey_ has answered over 250 million reader questions. Chicago Public Media is using OpenAI to transcribe 40 years of WBEZ audio archives.
On the business side, News Corp is developing Knowledge Agents that combine enterprise data with unstructured business knowledge, using Model Context Protocol to securely access their data lake. The Seattle Times built a prospecting agent that reduced ad sales lead generation from hours to minutes. OpenAI also launched the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations to share learnings and use cases.
