Whatnot acquires Shaped to power real-time live shopping recommendations

Livestream shopping platforms face a fundamentally harder recommendation problem than traditional e-commerce because inventory, auctions, and buyer intent all shift in real time. Whatnot‘s marketplace can have auctions ending in minutes while shows start and stop continuously, making static product catalogs useless. The company’s VP of Data and AI described live commerce as a ‘uniquely hard recommendation problem’ where speed is critical. This tension — delivering personalized discovery in a constantly changing environment — is the core challenge that the acquisition of Shaped aims to solve.

Whatnot announced it has acquired Shaped, a machine learning startup that combines customer data with large language models and ML to build real-time recommendation and search systems. Over the past six years, Whatnot already reduced recommendation latency from roughly a day to minutes, and Shaped‘s technology is expected to push that even closer to real time. Whatnot processes over 500,000 hours of live video and millions of real-time interactions weekly to continuously improve recommendations. As part of the deal, Shaped CEO Tullie Murrell and nearly a dozen engineers will join Whatnot, with Murrell leading a new Applied AI Research group. The acquisition builds on Whatnot‘s rapid growth, including surpassing one billion orders and adding 20 million buyers in the past year.

For builders working on real-time personalization, this acquisition reinforces that infrastructure for dynamic intent and inventory is not a luxury but a competitive necessity. As Whatnot expands into dozens of new categories, the ability to surface the right product during a live auction — where each second changes buyer demand — becomes a decisive moat. The move also signals that live commerce platforms are racing to integrate AI deeply, not as a feature but as the core discovery layer. The technical takeaway is clear: recommendation systems for non-stationary environments require fundamentally different architectures than traditional e-commerce, and acquiring specialized talent and technology is often faster than building from scratch.
